Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of large number of small sensor nodes that continuously observe environmental conditions. Energy consumption is a major challenge in WSNs due to its dynamic topology, highly decentralized infrastructure and resource constraint sensors. WSNs are easily compromised by various denial of service attacks due to these factors and that result in disastrous consequences. Gray hole and Black hole attack are attacks that reduce the performance of a WSN. So as to attain energy efficiency in WSNs, there is a need for efficient and secure protocols to defend against Gray hole and Black hole attacks. Many algorithms have been developed to protect against these attacks and each one claims them itself to be better than others. So in this paper, a survey of different detection mechanisms to protect against black hole and gray hole attacks in wireless sensor networks is discussed.
Keywords- Wireless Sensor Networks, Black hole attacks, Gray hole attacks, Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector Routing, Route Request, Route Reply
