Leveraging implicit knowledge from preprocessed naming examples for detecting anomalies

Abstract
The largest challenge in software development is to ensure that the software is correct, easy to maintain and extend. Identifier names are one of the most important sources of information about program entities. It constitutes the majority of tokens in source code and they are the primary source of conceptual information for program comprehension. The quality of identifier names might influence the quality of source code. One approach to provide meaning to programmers and tools is to expand abbreviations into full words. Problems related to equally typed arguments are hard to analyze. It involves the semantics of the program, which is not explicit in the source code but only exists in the mind of the programmer. The goal is to detect anomalies involving equally typed method arguments statically. It leverages identifiers to infer the semantics of arguments and their intended positions. It is an automatic, mostly language-agnostic static analysis to detect anomalies in the order of equally typed method arguments and reports warnings about potentially erroneous call sites of methods with equally typed arguments. We evaluate our approach with mature and well-tested Java programs. Short and meaningless names not only confuse programmers, but also prevent our analysis from inferring the semantics of arguments. Our work preprocesses naming examples before searching for anomalies.
